B3 with the Solomon Douglas Swingtet

Big Band Blues

This coming weekend is the big BABBLE dance exchange weekend here in New York City! On April 24th, for the late night Friday event, JookJoint Shimmy Blues brings you the Solomon Douglas Swingtet for some "Big Band Blues!!!!"

From the facebook event page:
The Solomon Douglas Swingtet is an eight-piece orchestra that plays swing, jazz, and blues music from every decade from the 1920s to the 1960s. The group has headlined such prominent blues dance events as the Emerald City Blues Festival (Seattle, 2005 and 2008) and the Blues ’n’ Soul Experience (Orlando, 2008). The Friday night after-hours party will have a “Big Band Blues” theme, featuring jazz and blues music from Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Erskine Hawkins, Count Basie, Ray Charles, Booker T. and the MG’s, Pinetop Perkins, and Oliver Nelson. We will also be featuring, for the first time, vocalist Meryl Zimmerman; Meryl has been singing jazz for over a decade, and has performed at various venues around New York, Saint Louis, and New Orleans. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Vocal Jazz Performance at Manhattan School of Music.
